Hardly any other city in Germany is as rich in historical buildings as the Saxon state capital Dresden. The City is located on both sides of the River Elbe. On the south side is the historic old town with numerous sights. One of them is the Frauenkirche in Dresden. It is the centre of the Neumarkt and is one of the largest sandstone buildings in the world.<\/p>\n

Frauenkirche in Dresden – the story continues<\/h2>\n

The church was built from 1726 to 1743 according to a design by George B\u00e4hr. Originally it was called Church of Our Lady. This was the church of St. Mary. The war came in 1945. Everything was burnt to ashes. Even the Frauenkirche burnt out and finally collapsed. Later came the era of the GDR. In this time the ruin was preserved and was left as a memorial against war and destruction.<\/p>\n

After the reunification and the fall of the Wall, reconstruction began. In 1993 all stones were carefully sorted and collected on long shelves. One year later the reconstruction began, which was completed in 2005. The work was financed almost exclusively by donations. Today the Frauenkirche in Dresden is one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in the city. Church services, concerts and celebrations take place here.
